Led by Reuben M. Koroma, the core of the band met at Sembakounya refugee camp. Like more than two million others they had fled Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war (1991-2002). Playing at camps for fellow refugees the band used music as a way through collective trauma. Their sound is a mixture of reggae and West African pop styles, such as soukous and highlife. Returning to Freetown, they recorded their first album, Living Like A Refugee, during the filming of an award-winning documentary of the same name. The exposure from these 2006 projects led to opportunities to tour the world, bringing their message of peace and optimism. Their second album Rise & Shine was released in 2010.
